Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to validate a Korean McGill Pain Questionnaire short form (SF-MPQ) and Korean Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS) for making evaluation of neuropathic pain (NeP) easier and facilitating participation in international studies by using a Korean assessment index.

Methods: A Korean SF-MPQ and Korean NPS were developed, and the validity and reliability were verified in patients with NeP. First, two rounds of forward translation-backward translation were carried out for development of the Korean SF-MPQ and NPS, and then, the cultural adaptation was conducted. To verify the validity of the adapted instruments, the Korean SF-MPQ and Korean NPS were provided to 3 professors of anesthesiology for a Content Validity Index (CVI) analysis. The internal consistency reliability of the Korean SF-MPQ and NPS was verified by using Cronbach¡¯s ¥á and item-total correlation.

Results: For the SF-MPQ, the CVI was 0.94 for the sensory dimension and was 0.58 for the emotional dimension. The CVI for the NPS was 0.97, indicating relevance. The Cronbach¡¯s ¥á for the SF-MPQ was 0.809, with the item-total correlation value ranging from 0.189 for ¡°aching¡± to 0.601 for ¡°splitting¡± and ¡°tiring-exhausting¡±. The Cronbach¡¯s ¥á for the Korean NPS was 0.756, and the item-total correlation values ranged from 0.273 for cold pain to 0.678 for unpleasantness.

Conclusions: The Korean versions of SF-MPQ and NPS show high internal consistency and criterion validity for patients with NeP, and are suitable instruments for evaluating NeP condition.
